Bangladeshi Art 101: A Brief History

4

Bangladeshi art is enjoying a renaissance, a development that artist Zainul Abedin would have approved of. Abedin is widely considered to be the modern art pioneer of Bangladesh, having earned worldwide fame through his stunning sketches of the Bengal famine in 1943. Other artists important to the modern art movement include Quamrul Hassan, Shafiuddin Ahmed and S.M. Sultan.

While the big four deserve all the fame they enjoy, they are not the only notable artists of Bangladesh. There are others, such as Qayyum Chowdhury, Murtaza Baseer, Aminul Islam, Debdas Chakraborty, Kazi Abdul Baset, Syed Jahangir, Shahabuddin Ahmed and Mohammad Kibria.
